WELCOME TO MOORMOTH
About Moormoth
Moormoth is the work of artist Felicity Sawkins-Hersee, creating textile and mixed-media artwork inspired by natural history, botanical forms and the quiet beauty of things collected, preserved and remembered.
My work begins with a fascination for the natural world: its shapes, textures, stories and small details. I am particularly drawn to the traditions of collecting and preservation, and to the feeling that an object can hold a story long after the moment in which it was found.
THE Moormoth ARCHIVE
The Moormoth Archive is an imagined natural history collection: a growing body of fictional specimens from a world that evolved just slightly differently from our own. Each piece is made by hand using textiles, metal, paper and found or handmade elements, then presented as though it were a genuine archival specimen, complete with labels, notes and the traces of its imagined history.
Alongside the Archive, I create painted botanical studies and sculptural pieces exploring the forms of leaves, flowers, seed heads and other fragments of the natural world.
I work from my home studio in Stockport, Greater Manchester, surrounded by the old things, plants, fabrics and materials that continually find their way into my work. Moormoth is a place for making, collecting, imagining and preserving.
Moormoth Studio
From my home studio I also host a small number of seasonally led creative workshops, offering relaxed, intimate opportunities to explore different materials and ways of making.
Workshops may include working with natural materials, painting, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, 3D making and other mixed-media processes, with projects often inspired by the natural world, collecting, folklore and the wider Moormoth Archive.
Some workshops will be simple opportunities to make something beautiful and enjoy the process; others may explore ideas and techniques that connect more closely with my own artistic practice.
The artwork is at the heart of Moormoth. The workshops are a way of opening the studio doors and sharing the pleasure of making.
This winter, Moormoth Studio opens its doors for a small series of intimate Christmas wreath-making workshops in Stockport. Working with fresh winter foliage, British dried botanicals, seed heads, berries, natural materials and beautiful ribbons, guests will create their own individual wreath to take home and enjoy throughout the festive season.
With just eight places per workshop, these are relaxed, friendly sessions with plenty of time to experiment, choose your own materials and make something completely personal.
No previous experience is needed, just come along, make something beautiful and enjoy a few hours at the Moormoth table.
